Ph.d.-project 2005-2008

The starting point of the project is an historically based analysis of online newspapers as a distinct medium, with the purpose of identifying the characteristics of online newspapers.

I will examine its distinctive features regarding media, content and form, and look at the interdependencies between online and printed newspapers.

An understanding of the significance of the internet in the field of media and communication theory demands a divided focus. Firstly, a focus on media history as a separate field of study, including internet as a medium. Secondly, a focus on the relationship between old and new media, which in this project will be exemplified by comparing printed and online newspapers.

The empirical research is conducted in two ways. The first is an investigation of the available archives, including both the newspapers archives as well as public and private archives. The second consists of interviewing publishers of both disciplines, and analysis of complementary material such as design manuals, guidelines etc.

The project is created by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Aarhus, in collaboration with the State and University Library in Aarhus. The scholarship is co-financed between the State and University Library, The National Research School of Media, Communication and Journalism (FMKJ) and the Faculty of Arts at the University of Aarhus.
